Medieval Doorway discovered

For many years it has been suspected that - although very old - the current entrance to the crypt is not the original way down. There have been alterations down the years on the south side of the crypt, largely connected with ventilation. Historians have long mused over the large window like structures that can be seen inside the crypt, but they are blocked with what looks like Victorian blue brickwork. The church has recently undergone a drainage project, whereby the old rainwater channels around the church - which were invariably blocked, causing much of the dampness in the crypt - have been replaced with a new underground piped system. This involved much digging in the vicinity of the church, and particularly of the crypt, and during this work the blue brickwork had to be removed. As soon as the work started, what appeared to be the top of one, and possibly two stone doorframes started to appear. Digging continued, and eventually revealed an almost perfectly preserved doorframe - which must have been the original entrance to the crypt. Some photographs of the doorways appear below.

This work is now complete, and the doorway is no longer visible. The crypt is again open for visitors - see main crypt page.
